Welcome to the Get ready for Geneva official website...for children and young people in England who want action on children's rights

Checking children’s rights

The United Nations will soon check what the UK Government is doing to make sure children and young people’s human rights are respected.

The examination will be carried out by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in Geneva, Switzerland. It will hear from:

  • The Government
  • Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) like children’s charities
  • Human rights bodies AND ....
  • Children and young people.

The Get ready for Geneva project

Get ready for Geneva will take your messages to the UN. Our project is special because:

  • It’s being led by children and young people
  • It’s all about children and young people’s human rights
  • It will gather children and young people’s views and push for change
  • It lasts for three years (until March 2010) – loads of time for us to make a really big impact!

The Children’s Rights Alliance for England

The Children’s Rights Alliance for England (CRAE) tries to make sure the Convention on the Rights of the Child is always followed. We want children and young people to be respected and taken seriously.

UNICEF made cartoons to celebrate the Convention on the Rights of the Child. We’ve included a selection of these around our site.

Random fact no 3

England has one of the lowest ages in Europe for when children can be charged by the police of committing a crime and taken to court – just 10 years. Young people cannot legally buy a pet or fireworks until they are 18 years.
