Young adviser - working with CRAE

Its Charlie here, I am currently on my last day of being a CRAE young adviser and its going to end up being very hard to go back to my normal daily routine, Even though I have had early commute I have enjoyed nearly every minute of the working days here. I was given very clear tasks but have learnt so much from just this experience. It was great working in the office with all the CRAE staff and working on different projects.

Over the month that I have worked at CRAE (well 42 hours in about 30 minutes) I have only had two bad things. The first was arriving too early and not being able to get into the building and the other was the constant shoulder pain from slouching. That was a lesson in itself. But the subway trips and post-it notes kept me going. Mostly having the staff there for support for my work was the best thing that could have helped.

The work load was very fair, I’m not going to say it was easy but with the pay I don’t think they can let us have it for nothing. From all the work I did and press release and work plans I gained something from everything learning new facts and skills over the month.

Now going back to boarding school tomorrow I am just can’t wait to tell people everything that I have learnt and about what the entire experience was like. I advise to all of you to look out for the bulletins and adverts next year and apply to become an adviser. You can learn a lot from just doing a few hours a day but this experience has truly set me up for my future jobs.

UN Report

Hi, it’s Kat here!

I wanted to write a blog about the UN Report, I am part of the Drafting committee in which writes this report. If you don’t already know the UN Report is the thing that is sent off to Geneva to tell them how well/bad the UK is treating children’s rights; there are different sections, e.g. ‘friends and family’, ‘crime’...(a few more). This report includes loads more information, as well as reccomendations.

The section I wrote was the ‘friends and family’ one. I wrote this report with a member of the steering group. It was really interesting to find out what children and young people thought about this subject. – It was also very surprising, it showed that children and young people have voices. I also think think the report is looking amazing! Well done!!

The weekend

On Saturday 23rd of February 2008, members of the Get Ready for Geneva Team (website & communications, children’s rights investigators, children right’s champions and the Steering group) met in the CRAE office – London. They were looking at the surveys filled in on the Get Ready for Geneva website and helping put them together into a draft report which will be presented at Geneva in June.

The next day the drafting committee, some members of the team in which were at the meeting the day before worked very hard, in a group to help put the report together further. They each had a section e.g. Play, Family & Friends, they used the help from the analysis meeting the day before and more information from the surveys to create a few pages of great information, quotes and answers from focus groups.

Laura, part of the website and communications team and the children’s rights champion team quoted:

I think the Evidence analysis meeting on Saturday and the drafting committee on Sunday was great! I really enjoyed getting to meet lots of other young people who are part of different teams and the web team. Everybody got on well, and did great to get so much work done over the weekend to such a high standard!

I think everyone would like to say a BIG well done to all the CRAE members who worked there, especially Carla and Sam who worked very hard over the weekend!! Thank you!!

Two weeks ago, my brother and I attended a conference about Going Green. Lots of important people such as David Lammy MP and other councillors attended. We were both there to explore and interview people. Me and my brother interviewed over 15 people some of which were councillors and general people of the public. I interviewed David Lammy MP as well. I asked him questions about what he’s doing to become more ‘green’ and how he will make people become more ‘green’. We both learnt alot from this event and in a few weeks, we will be in the newspapers about what we did there!

On Saturday the 24th of November 2007, Parit and I attended the event about children’s rights called Freedom- Breaking the Chains at the Bernie Grants Arts Centre. The event was organised by the Mayor for London. We both interviewed 31 people, both young and old. We asked them different questions about children’s rights. We were also standing by the stand and telling people about the project. We gave out lots and lots of the Get Ready For Geneva postcards. Lots of people were really interested in the project and wanted to find out more so they signed up for more information which is good news!!!
Carla and Krishna and two investigators, Laura and Dominic also attended and they were running some workshops.
Parit and I really enjoyed the event because we interviewed lots of people and spread the word about the project and we hope that we will be able to attend many events like this one in the future.

Each year, the Mayor picks a charity. And this year, Mayor Celia in Warrington chose children and young people. she was a former high school teacher and felt that children and young people was an appropriate choice. She believes it is important to involve them in democracy as well. She has a big concern of negative portrayal of young people in the media.

Hi,
Well like the title says this is my first blog as part of the Website & communications team. I became part of the team because I am almost always on the internet and love doing things which involve promoting GR4G to the wider community in what ever ways that might be.
As well as being part of the Website & communication team I am a childrens rights Champion for the west midlands, I love this role as I can work closely with other young people to help them learn about their rights… this means I do have another blog, so please read that too, – I am also known as “chasecat”.
I will try to keep my updates regular! either on this blog or champions blog!
Another top website you might like to have a browse at is http://www.radiowaves.co.uk/geneva its great! the website team are running it!

During the summer holidays, I went to Switzerland for one week. In Switzerland, I promoted get ready for geneva and radiowavs by giving out the postcards and get ready for geneva and wearing the radiowaves t-shirt on top of Mount Titlis, Lake Brienz and the Lion Monument in Luzern.
Unfortunatley, I wasn’t able to go to geneva and the united nations but I went to all the other places in Switzerland!!
